Good Morning, I am so excited to announce our newest Unit Study. I’ve been waiting on our materials to arrive and they have finely done so – and I am working non-stop to get everything in order. In my anxious mind, I have begun creating a mini-unit study to go along with it. What are we learning? Drug Use and Abuse Prevention. The wonderful folks at NIDA, SAMHSA, and the Department of Health and Human Services have excellent resources available for free! You can visit the websites here: SAMHSA NIDA Department of Health and Human Services I have received materials to teach my kids from 3rd grade through 12th grade, including CD Rom and DVD discs, all at no charge! Folks, if you are a homeschool parent, you know how wonderful having educational materials can be and to get them free – that’s the icing on the proverbial cupcake! But – the greatest idea I have had this week is to expand our learning to the legal realm of drug use and abuse by venturing into the investigation and detective areas and using those skills as a model of learning. I have created a mini unit-study in which we will use to incorporate sleuthing skills, and which also will allow us to venture out for a field trip. Thanks to Corporal Gray, our local D.A.R.E officer, we have been accepted for a field trip to the local police department. While we are focusing our entire unit on assertive ways of saying no to drug use, we are also learning about the ways drugs harm our bodies. Additionally, since law enforcement is a difficult task and we are so thankful for our civil servant workers, we are learning about the psychological effects of law enforcement. However, because of the nature and risk involved with criminal investigations, we will be using the mini-unit study at home to experience detective work and investigations. I am including a few of the materials we are using and I cannot wait for you to see them! Feel free to download them and use them in your own homeschool studies. You can find them at the bottom of my freebie page or by clicking here. Because I have modified some of the worksheets to meet our learning unit, I am including those pertaining to our learning modules. I am also including the link to the online worksheets I found to use for mathematics. I am also including some photos of the items I received from the state departments for our module. I love learning and I love teaching. The only thing I love better than each of those is when they come together for my children – teaching them and watching them learn! Hope you all have had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday – don’t let homeschool burnout hit! If you need a break, take it – and use the time to think of something new you can do to keep it fresh! Until next time, LaVonda
