Good day readers and passers-by, I can only say "Woohoo!" We are over the holidays! SO over them. In fact, we are so beyond the holidays that we are ready to begin preparing for our annual spring break camping trip! For the last two years, we have ventured out into nature and recently decided that we would try to visit a new state park in Arkansas every year, and hopefully, more than one time a year. Last year, we camped three times. Hopefully, we will get to venture out of Arkansas before all the kids have graduated! The first time I ever went camping, it was a horrible experience. I was in Girl Scouts. The trip was going to last the weekend. We had our tents, sleeping bags, and all the junk food a gaggle of girls could possibly need. What we didn’t have was good weather. The weather was rotten. Rain and rain and more rain. But we were determined to make the most of it. Until the tent began leaking. It wasn’t long after that and we were piled into cars and heading home. The plan was to stay at the leader and assistant leaders houses and continue with the scheduled events in our local area. I just wanted to go home. I was wet, cold, and sleepy. Fast-forward some unspoken number of years and here I am – a homeschool mom – and lover of camping. The outdoors appeals to me in such a way, I don’t know that it can be explained. I’m not physically fit, but I enjoy walking in nature! Listening to the sounds, appreciating the beauty of the scenery, and seeing God’s amazing artwork in the skies from sun up to sun down. Last year was great! We even had our neighbors attend our trip with us and were blessed enough to get campsites that were side-by-side. I love our neighbors and value their companionship, especially when we get to experience nature together. This year, I’m hoping to be a little more prepared. So now, I’m left with the exciting (yet daunting) task of making sure I don’t forget anything, unlike last year, when the knife was so greatly needed and I’d left it behind. I’ve decided that I am going to assign tasks to each of the kids that will be going, so they can contribute to the work, and have a little responsibility during the trip. But before I get to that, I need to get some basics out of the way! Be sure to check out our prep list – this is a smaller sample of the one we will be using. Until next time! LaVonda

Good Monday Morning to you all!
I try to make Monday's more pleasant, but that is not always the case. For instance, as I was (disinterested in) rolling out of bed this morning, I began reflecting on the last 72 hours. Our kids and I went on a camping trip this past weekend. I find that getting out into nature really does help curb the electronic addictions that many of us face, myself included. Time seems different when you are camping. Everything slows down. You can really take a moment to hear your own thoughts. All weekend, we were laughing, cutting up with each other, and despite our oldest coming down with strep throat (I thought it would miss her), we had a great time. A little campfire chat, a random proposal by my eldest son to a tree during a rousing game of Truth or Dare. All the way down to our camp neighbors running down the lane yelling "The red coats are coming" (We bring all kinds of education to our trips) - we had a blast! I even had a campfire s'more for the first time in over 14 years (I still don't like them). A blast, right!?! Yes! A great weekend. That was the beginning of the end.
When I was younger, history was boring. Sitting in a classroom full of my peers listening to the teacher drone on about some event that happened eons ago. Read, memorize, and regurgitate the information onto an exam in hopes of expanded my knowledge base. I retained little and felt empty after the school year had ended. As a homeschool mom, I absolutely did not want that same experience transferring to my children. I wanted them to have something to hold on to. Something that would encourage them to continue learning about their history and to gain a better understanding of the cultures that existed (and still exist) in their world today.
