Many parents ask me, "LaVonda, how do you shop for groceries when you have such a large number of people in your family?" My answer is always a giggle. I take quite a bit of pride in my 21 years of shopping for groceries for my family. In those 21 years, I've couponed, compared prices, used price-match at Wal-Mart, and scoured sale ads looking for the "best" deal. But what I really learned through those 21 years is this...

Good day readers and passers-by, I can only say "Woohoo!" We are over the holidays! SO over them. In fact, we are so beyond the holidays that we are ready to begin preparing for our annual spring break camping trip! For the last two years, we have ventured out into nature and recently decided that we would try to visit a new state park in Arkansas every year, and hopefully, more than one time a year. Last year, we camped three times. Hopefully, we will get to venture out of Arkansas before all the kids have graduated! The first time I ever went camping, it was a horrible experience. I was in Girl Scouts. The trip was going to last the weekend. We had our tents, sleeping bags, and all the junk food a gaggle of girls could possibly need. What we didn’t have was good weather. The weather was rotten. Rain and rain and more rain. But we were determined to make the most of it. Until the tent began leaking. It wasn’t long after that and we were piled into cars and heading home. The plan was to stay at the leader and assistant leaders houses and continue with the scheduled events in our local area. I just wanted to go home. I was wet, cold, and sleepy. Fast-forward some unspoken number of years and here I am – a homeschool mom – and lover of camping. The outdoors appeals to me in such a way, I don’t know that it can be explained. I’m not physically fit, but I enjoy walking in nature! Listening to the sounds, appreciating the beauty of the scenery, and seeing God’s amazing artwork in the skies from sun up to sun down. Last year was great! We even had our neighbors attend our trip with us and were blessed enough to get campsites that were side-by-side. I love our neighbors and value their companionship, especially when we get to experience nature together. This year, I’m hoping to be a little more prepared. So now, I’m left with the exciting (yet daunting) task of making sure I don’t forget anything, unlike last year, when the knife was so greatly needed and I’d left it behind. I’ve decided that I am going to assign tasks to each of the kids that will be going, so they can contribute to the work, and have a little responsibility during the trip. But before I get to that, I need to get some basics out of the way! Be sure to check out our prep list – this is a smaller sample of the one we will be using. Until next time! LaVonda
Dear Readers,
By now, I'm sure you've come to appreciate advice from others. At one point in time, you've been online looking up information. Perhaps you are looking for a recipe, or tips on budgeting. If you are like me, you've researched how to do some of the more difficult things, such as changing the brakes on your vehicle or even how to identify learning problems your child may have. Why are these things seemingly left out of learning? Dear Readers,
As parents, we struggle. As home-school parents, we struggle with struggle. We have this idea of what we know and what we want our children to achieve. But are we covering all of it? |
