My apologies dear readers,
It has been a little bit since I've posted, but I do not want you to think it is because of you! You are GREAT! This has been one heck of a year and I need a time out! For instance, on January 9th, after a great day of homeschool and babysitting for a neighbor who just started to work the week before, I managed to break my fibula in two places, requiring a week-long hospital stay, a 2 and a half hour surgery, a steel plate and some bolts. Then, as if that weren't enough, my daughter calls me in frantic mode saying her husband of three months wants a divorce and has kicked her out (boy, he had us snowed!). Then, two days after she moves home, she has a sore throat and swollen glands. I initially thought it was her ear acting up again, and possibly strep... But that would be too easy.

Good day readers and passers-by, I can only say "Woohoo!" We are over the holidays! SO over them. In fact, we are so beyond the holidays that we are ready to begin preparing for our annual spring break camping trip! For the last two years, we have ventured out into nature and recently decided that we would try to visit a new state park in Arkansas every year, and hopefully, more than one time a year. Last year, we camped three times. Hopefully, we will get to venture out of Arkansas before all the kids have graduated! The first time I ever went camping, it was a horrible experience. I was in Girl Scouts. The trip was going to last the weekend. We had our tents, sleeping bags, and all the junk food a gaggle of girls could possibly need. What we didn’t have was good weather. The weather was rotten. Rain and rain and more rain. But we were determined to make the most of it. Until the tent began leaking. It wasn’t long after that and we were piled into cars and heading home. The plan was to stay at the leader and assistant leaders houses and continue with the scheduled events in our local area. I just wanted to go home. I was wet, cold, and sleepy. Fast-forward some unspoken number of years and here I am – a homeschool mom – and lover of camping. The outdoors appeals to me in such a way, I don’t know that it can be explained. I’m not physically fit, but I enjoy walking in nature! Listening to the sounds, appreciating the beauty of the scenery, and seeing God’s amazing artwork in the skies from sun up to sun down. Last year was great! We even had our neighbors attend our trip with us and were blessed enough to get campsites that were side-by-side. I love our neighbors and value their companionship, especially when we get to experience nature together. This year, I’m hoping to be a little more prepared. So now, I’m left with the exciting (yet daunting) task of making sure I don’t forget anything, unlike last year, when the knife was so greatly needed and I’d left it behind. I’ve decided that I am going to assign tasks to each of the kids that will be going, so they can contribute to the work, and have a little responsibility during the trip. But before I get to that, I need to get some basics out of the way! Be sure to check out our prep list – this is a smaller sample of the one we will be using. Until next time! LaVonda
Hello Homeschool moms and dads,
It's a New Year! It's a new semester (for some), and for us, it's a new day! We are two days into our new homeschool semester and the tempers are flaring! I kid you not, yesterday, the boys carried on like I had taken away every fun thing they have ever known or experienced when I said, "it's time for lessons". The displeasure of their assignments dwelled well into the evening, and the only one who seemed remotely happy was the dog! Little Bit was eager to get to the telly while the boys were slugging through their work, aimlessly and without intent to learn. And here I was thinking we were going to start the new year in a pleasant way! What was I thinking? Where did I go wrong? The answer might surprise you! Dear Readers and Passers-by,
There is nothing, this side of it simply 'not happening' that can prepare you for the feelings you experience when your child leaves home. As a homeschool parent, that feeling is multiplied because you consider the circumstances: Did I prepare them well enough? Are they going to be OK? Am I going to be OK? How are their younger siblings going to respond? These are but a few of the questions that raced through my brain when she began to reach for the door. True, she had been showing signs of wanting to be on her own for some time, but I pushed those notions away because she just wasn't ready. But in truth, I wasn't ready. I was not willing to accept the fact that my 18 year old daughter was a grown woman. Hello lovely readers,
I am excited to show what we've been working on at Evans Homeschool Academy! We all know that life is full of charts, graphs, cycles, and images. We also know that "reading" information can be one of the most mundane tasks we've ever had to fight through. But what if I told you that you can create some spectacular graphs, awesome data, and incorporate computer skills, mathematical terminology, equations, and conversions in one project?! Would you be surprised to know the data is as easy as checking the weather? Hello Readers and Passers-by, It's been a Wednesday... all day. I'm feeling it, too. I woke this morning with goals and plans. I've accomplished nothing. Well, I can't say nothing, but I did not cross one thing off of my task list. So much for that. Is it me, or are the mid-week blahs real? I have tried multiple times to avoid these and this week, they caught up to me. I am never ready for them, either. I would blame it on the weather, but it's been this way all week. What do you do to tame the mid-week blahs? I'm curious and would love to hear from you. In other news, I've thought of nothing new to do for homeschool this week. I really am feeling a burn out. I want to feel that elated feeling I get at the beginning of the school year. I know it will happen by the time we start back to work on the 2nd, but this week is just... terrible. I find myself getting bored (and that NEVER happens). I could read, but I don't want to sit still. I could clean the house, but I don't want to work. Tell me I am not the only one who experiences this feeling? Please! I think I'm going to take the remainder of the week off from the blog, from homeschool, from it all. I'm simply not going to do anything blog or homeschool related (if I can bare it), and just rest. Until next time, LaVonda Dear Readers,
We've all been there: that moment when we realize we simply do not have enough time in the day to accomplish all that we have written on our to-do list. If you are like me, you add the stuff you didn't complete to the bottom of tomorrow's list, only to realize that you will not have enough time then, either. What to do? What to do? I'll tell you! Dear Readers and Passers-by,
Just a few updates for your before I call it a night. 1. Our newsletter was sent out today. In the newsletter, there was a link for a freebie. The packet had an error in the link within the packet for the video. The updated pacekt is available on our resources tab/middle school at the bottom of the page. Be sure to get your updated version. 2. If you haven't done so yet, please take the time to complete the survey which is linked on the newsletter, as well as HERE. Ten questions and will take about three minutes of your time. No personal information is stored or retained and your participation remains anonymous. 3. Kim at Learningfromlife5.com took some time to interview our homeschool family. You can read the interview on her blog - check it out! 3. We recently participated in a demonstration regarding the North Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) and I'll post on that this weekend, so stay tuned! Hang on to your hats - here is where it gets hairy! 4. My oldest recently got married. Momma is NOT ready for this, and this, along with #3, led to #5. 5. I got a new tattoo. The year is almost over and it doesn't feel like it should be. But, there is always a great memory near the end of the year and that is #6! 6. Our Wedding Anniversary! I can't believe it will be 14 years! Aside from that maddness, we are also launching two new blogs. The Vibe - a blog promoting writing skills, peer reviews and socialization for the kids. Brewed Coffee - a new blog by our guest writer, Gia. She is a homeschool mom and avid blogger who has graciously agreed to contribute to our blog as well. She is witty, and offers a different view, so give her a warm welcome. Her first write-up will be at the beginning of the year. Be sure and check around the website - we are updating! As always, if you have any questions or need to speak with me regarding our products or promotions, feel free to message me on our Facebook Page, find us on Twitter (@GenHomeschool), or e-mail me directly at [email protected]! I love to hear from our readers and welcome feedback, ideas, topics, etc. Alright - That's it for now! Hoping to get back up and on top of my game in the coming days, but if I don't write before then, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Good day fellow homeschoolers (and passers-by),
It is a cold morning in rural Arkansas. We've finished most of our school day and it's just about noon. As I sit here, writing this post, I feel pulled in a thousand directions. I have housework that needs to be completed, some sewing that should be done (if I could find my missing presser foot, that would be great!), and papers to grade. On top of that, I need to prep for dinner, make the bed, clean out the car, tidy the laundry room, clean the homeschool room, file some papers, complete our next unit study, make out christmas cards, finish updating our site, I'd love to get passed chapter 4 of the book I'm reading, finish the last episode of the new series I'm watching on Netflix, maybe grab a shower, trim my nails, put on a little make-up, spend time with my husband, FEEL HUMAN... And those are just a few of the things at the top of my mind. I'm sure if I thought about it for more than thirty seconds, I could name another twenty or thirty things that either need to be done, or that I'd like to do. But why? This is going to sound pessimistic, I do not intend for that, but why finish all of those things, only for them to be replaced with 'other' things. Things that are going to weigh me down just as these do. But why? |
